Animal Farm
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Shorter University's production of Animal Farm, a theatrical journey that merges the familiar and the foreboding. Grant Wood's iconic painting, American Gothic, has long been a symbol of the quintessential American experience. In this masterpiece, Wood captures the essence of rural life, portraying a farmer and his daughter against the backdrop of a modest farmhouse. The painting's power lies in its ability to evoke a sense of the familiar—the hardworking, stoic individuals who have shaped the American landscape.

Our production takes its cues from American Gothic, weaving its visual and thematic elements into George Orwell's allegory. Just as the painting represents the familiar aspects of American life, Animal Farm introduces us to characters and a setting that, on the surface, feel equally familiar—a farm and its inhabitants. However, it is within this seemingly ordinary setting that the foreboding undertones emerge. Orwell's story delves into the complexities of power, the fragility of ideals, and the dangers of unchecked authority. As you watch our adaptation unfold, you will sense growing unease, the creeping disquiet that mirrors the foreboding in Wood's painting. The farm animals' struggle for justice and equality begins as an echo of the familiar American spirit, yet it transforms into a dark and cautionary tale. Our talented cast and crew have worked diligently to capture both the familiar and the foreboding in their performances and the visual aspects of our production.

We hope that you will find resonance in the juxtaposition of these elements, provoking thought and reflection. As you witness the characters' journeys and transformations, consider how the familiar can morph into the foreboding, and how ideals can be corrupted when power goes unchecked. American Gothic and Animal Farm both challenge us to examine the complexities of our own society and the responsibilities we bear as members of it. Thank you for being a part of this unique experience, where we blend the iconic with the cautionary. We invite you to embrace the familiar, confront the foreboding, and engage in the conversation that these works inspire.
